Redevelopment projects are moving forward to create additional housing along Madison’s East Washington Avenue, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
A pair of five-story apartment buildings proposed by Fond du Lac’s Volker Development would add 258 total new housing units on the 3200 and 3300 blocks of the thoroughfare between Aberg Avenue and Highway 151. An 86-unit apartment building would go up at 3222-3238 E. Washington Ave. and 3229 Ridgeway Ave., and a 162-unit apartment building would be constructed at 3361-3375 E. Washington Ave. and 922-930 N. Fair Oaks Ave.
An auto shop, strip malls, and five single-family homes on the 3300 block of East Washington Avenue would be razed to make way for the projects, which received partial approval from Madison’s Plan Commission on Monday.
Volker is requesting low-income housing tax credits from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) for the larger building, which would require the 162-unit facility to reserve some units for affordable housing for those making no more than 60% of the area median income.
The project will go before Madison’s Urban Design Commission on Wednesday and must obtain additional approvals from the Plan Commission and City Council before construction can begin.
