Madison Death Studio + bookshop opened on July 1, the Cap Times reported.
Founded by Meghan Allynn Johnson, the aim of the shop is to provide a space to talk about grief and also provide resources on grief.
“People are just not in a culture that practices grief,” Johnson told the outlet. “Our culture is hostile to ideas of grief and death … it’s not productive in the ways that we’re supposed to be productive in a capitalist system.”
Johnson pursued death work after losing her parents in 2018 and 2020.
After their deaths she had a daughter and moved from New York to Madison to explore death doulas and death midwife work.
The shop is located at 2716 Atwood Ave.
