Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin wants Verizon to explain how it will help rural customers in northern Wisconsin if its plans to drop phone service are approved, according to an Oct. 20 report from WSAW-TV in Wausau.

If its plans are approved by the Federal Communications Commission, Verizon-owned Frontier’s copper-based phone services will be discontinued within a month, leaving hundreds of people with few options in a region that is still trying to expand broadband service.

The report said the company has yet to respond to a letter Baldwin sent to the CEO of Verizon. In the letter, she demanded to know how the company will provide replacements.

Baldwin said in the report that people are concerned about the isolation that would occur if their service is dropped.
The situation also raises public safety concerns if people are unable to call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance.
