Enbridge, the Canadian energy company that in late summer reported a substantial gas leak on its reroute of the Line 5 oil and gas pipeline in northern Wisconsin, is now responding to an aquifer breach on the same project, according to a report by Wisconsin Public Radio.

The breach occurred last week during installation of a new section of the pipeline under the Marengo River.

“A flow of water was observed following the direct installation of pipe beneath the Marengo River,” Enbridge spokesperson Juli Kellner said in a statement. “The observation was reported to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR); agency representatives have visited the site.

“Enbridge is working with the DNR and other engineering and environmental specialists to determine next steps,” Kellner said. “The water flow continues to be monitored and contained.”

The breach, first reported by Northern News Now, follows an Aug. 25 gas leak that released over 1.3 million gallons of natural gas liquids into the air and prompted an evacuation.
