Alliant Energy, a Madison-based energy utility, is talking with data center developers who are considering seven potential sites in Wisconsin and Iowa, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.
The talks were disclosed Friday morning by Alliant CEO Lisa Barton during the company’s earnings call.
Barton also said the company is considering expansions to three existing data centers in its service territory.
Alliant serves customers in southern and central Wisconsin, including areas of Dane County outside Madison, and parts of Iowa.
The company did not disclose the locations of the new sites, but the utility has already entered into agreements to provide 3.4 gigawatts of electricity to hyperscale data center projects. They include Meta’s Wisconsin data center in Beaver Dam and Google and QTS data centers in Iowa.
None of the facilities are in the city of Madison, which has imposed a 12-month moratorium on data centers while it crafts an ordinance to regulate them.
Under a proposed regulatory framework, the city would limit the size of data centers to 100,000 square feet. The size limitation would in effect ban the construction of the large hyperscale data centers that accommodate artificial intelligence applications.
