Doc du Jour |
| 3 p.m. |
Blue Spoon Cafe in Middleton |
This Sunday, physicians from Dean Clinics and St. Mary’s Hospital move away from medicine to chop, sauté and marinade. It’s all part of an annual culinary competition benefiting Dean Foundation's Health Outreach Programs, called Doc du Jour!
Guests can gather to watch the competition, starting at 3 p.m. at the Blue Spoon Café in Middleton. The doctors will serve up creative cuisine, accompanied by a generous variety of domestic and foreign wines. At the end of the afternoon, guests vote on their favorite dish. The winner receives the prestigious title of Doc du Jour! Returning chefs include Dean CEO & President Craig Samitt, MD, Dr. Zorba Paster, Dr. Michael Frontiera and defending champion Dr. Bill Ehrhardt!
To tease your taste buds, here are some of the hors d’oeuvres our docs will be preparing!
-Chickpea Polenta with Olives -Smoked Salmon Cheesecake w/ Indonesian Crackers
-Cauliflower Soup “Cappuccino” -Thai ‘Tasteations’
-Wonton Cups with Fresh Berries
In an ongoing effort to increase awareness of proper nutrition and healthy eating, hors d’oeuvres prepared for Doc du Jour will follow eating well nutrition and recipe guidelines. These guidelines prescribe nutritional standards for healthy weight, heart health, high calcium, potassium and fiber, as well as low calories, carbs, cholesterol and sodium. In adhering to these guidelines, Doc du Jour’s goal is to demonstrate that delicious food can be nutritious, too.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on gourmet meals prepared exclusively for them in the competing physicians’ homes. The dinners typically include a first course, soup/salad, entrée and dessert, along with accompanying wine! Tickets for the Doc du Jour event are $75 per person, with proceeds benefiting Dean Foundation.

Workshop: Engaging Your Nonprofit Board |
| 9:00AM-11:00AM (reg at 8:30AM) |
Goodman Community Center, 149 Waubesa St., Madison |
A non-profit Board can be among its most powerful assets -- when used correctly. Too often, Board members end up listening to committee reports and focusing on typos in the minutes, rather than providing the oversight and insight needed for the organization to remain viable amidst changing conditions. The result is that people neglect their responsibilities or deflect them to others who already have much to do. To address these challenges, people need to know and understand the importance of their roles and how concrete tools and techniques can convert even things like fundraising into rewarding tasks.
Attendees will walk away with ideas and actions for energizing and engaging Board members to advance the organization's mission. The session will be led by Melanie Schmidt, principal of Timpano Consulting. |

October 2009 Business Alliance Beat the Cold Meet and Greet at Plan B, 924 Williamson St, Madison, WI 53703, benefiting AIDS Network's Food Pantry when you bring and donate detergent and cleaning supplies
This month, be proud of yourself, enjoy something good to eat, feel good inside, and help others by joining the Business Alliance's monthly Beat the Cold Meet and Greet at Plan B. With offices in Madison, Beloit, and Janesville, AIDS Network is the state designated AIDS service provider for 13 counties in South Central Wisconsin.
Open is open every Wednesday (excluding the first Wednesday of the month), and designed to meet special nutritional and home supply needs, AIDS Network's Food Pantry is open to anyone who is HIV positive and living under 300% of the federal poverty level. To clear up earlier information, one does not have to be a client of AIDS Network to receive items from the food pantry. One must register and is encouraged to meet with the agency's nutritionist for a nutritional assessment in order to maximum the benefit of the program.
"Up until a few years ago, AIDS Network operated its own food pantry, but stopped when we were able to satisfy the needs of our clients using other resources in the community," said AIDS Network Executive Director Karen Dotson. "Unfortunately, much has changed in the past year or so and we realized that the only way we could properly serve our clients, most of whom live well below the poverty level, was to once again have our own food pantry."

WI BADD (Wisconsin Business Analyst Development Day) |
| 8:00 am - 5:30 pm |
Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall |
Business Analysts and Information Technology professionals unite for the 3rd annual WI BADD conference. Wisconsin's non-profit local chapters of International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) sponsor this educational and networking opportunity.
Over 500 business analysis enthusiasts and people in other software development roles across Wisconsin and several surrounding states will enjoy a full day of relevant business analysis and software requirements keynote presentations by some of the industry's leading experts:
Kathleen Barret (Toronto), IIBA President
Ellen Gottesdiener (Boston), President of EBG Consulting, Author of The Software Requirements Memory Jogger
Barbara Carkenord (Atlanta), President of B2T Training, Author of Seven Steps to Mastering Business Analysis
Roxanne Miller (Madison), President of Requirements Quest, Author of The Quest for Software Requirements
At a Greater Madison chapter meeting in January, some of Wisconsin CIOs participated on a panel discussion regarding the value of the Business Analyst role on software development projects.
“Business Analysts are an essential asset to project success,” says panelist David Cagigal, CIO at Alliant Energy. Cagigal continued to share that across four business silos, reports on lessons learned clearly showed that the business silo that had a number of business analysts on IT projects had greater project success than the other three business silos without analysts.
Let’s not underestimate the Business Analyst’s career path potential! Peter Logothetis, Sr. VP and CIO at QBE the Americas, and Leslie Hearn, CIO at TDS Telecom, both started out their careers in business analysis roles. Logothetis advised that, “You have to learn the business and be like a young child that constantly asks ‘Why?’”
“In addition to reading [IIBA's] BABOK, of course,” recommended Hearn, “you need to develop yourself through involvement and networking via organizations such as IIBA.” Hearn further suggests that, “You invite your business counterpart to have coffee with you, and take the opportunity to get to know their pain.”
“Your education beyond academic learning is essential to your success,” offers Bruce Maas, CIO at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “And, if there are courses you want, you need to let us know.”
The WI BADD 2009 conference promises to deliver worthwhile educational topics, great food, and a fun-filled day with lots of donated door prizes from numerous event sponsors. |

Your local chapter of American Society of Training & Development brings you "Technical Writing Secrets: Improve Your Written Materials and More!" |
| 5:30pm-7:30pm |
Meriter |
Technical writing! It sounds intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. When the day arrives that you are asked to express in writing what you do, what you did, or what you want someone else to do – you’ll be ready. This type of writing is called technical writing. And although it is not writing you perform daily, it is the type of writing that can make or break a career.
A trainer is a person that gives instructions – often in writing. Knowing how to put on paper what you do or what you want others to do doesn’t have to be that difficult.
Attend this workshop and learn the secrets that advanced writers know about documentation and written training materials. Key concepts taught in this highly interactive workshop include how to:
- involve the reader
- check for consistency
- organize for your reader
- eliminate unnecessary words
- avoid redundancy
- incorporate reader friendly words
Target Audience
This workshop is for anyone that needs to improve writing skills to develop useful materials. Participants are encouraged to bring current writing projects/materials for instructor review, if time allows.
Attendees will take home a checklist for technical writers and a proofreading tip sheet.

Forward Community Investments 15th Year Celebration Breakfast |
| 8 - 10 a.m. |
The Concourse Hotel, Madison |
The celebration includes a breakfast event on Fri., Oct. 23, at The Concourse Hotel, featuring one of the country’s most influential nonprofit leaders – Robert Egger.
“The first thing you've got to know about me – all I ever wanted to do was open the greatest nightclub in the world,” says Egger. “I had admired, but managed (purposely) to avoid, volunteering. . .which is why I still refer to myself as a ‘recovering hypocrite.’"
Egger founded DC Central Kitchen in 1989; it has grown to a $5+ million operation that has distributed over 20 million meals and helped 700 men and women gain full-time employment. In 2006, he co-convened the first-ever Nonprofit Congress bringing together hundreds of nonprofit colleagues from around the country. He now directs the V3 Campaign, working to raise the voice, value and vote of the nonprofit sector across America.
“Our nation faces challenging issues that demand more coordination and cooperation from nonprofits in communities from coast to coast--issues that will also demand a greater understanding of our social and economic potential,” says Egger. “We have to move beyond the notion of simple charity and recognize that our resources must be maximized, our results measured and our methods modernized.”
Egger has now been listed among the Non Profit Times “50 Most Powerful and Influential Nonprofit Leaders” for the past four years. He has been named an Oprah Angel, a Washingtonian of the Year, and the 2004 James Beard Foundation “Humanitarian of the Year.” Egger’s book on the non-profit sector, Begging for Change, received the 2005 McAdam Prize for Best Nonprofit Management Book.

4-C (Community Coordinated Child Care, Inc.) Ribbon-Cutting and Open House |
| 4:00-7:00 p.m. with ribbon-cutting taking place at 4:30 p.m. |
5 Odana Court in Madison |
“We’re looking forward to sharing our new facility with child care providers, businesses and the community,” said Jody Bartnick, 4-C Executive Director. “We’ll be offering those attending a fresh
perspective of the services 4-C provides to the community.” City of Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will assist with the ribbon-cutting as well as a representative from the child care profession. Wegner LLP will be sponsoring the event.
The agency’s previous building was deemed a total loss after an August 13, 2008 fire. The new building, built on the same foundation, is being supported by a capital campaign that will allow the agency to focus on services instead of financing a mortgage. Individuals or organizations making a donation of $250 or more will receive
an engraved brick taken from the remains of the old 4-C building that burned down. This is the first time in the agency’s 38-year history the agency has looked to the community to help fund a formal fundraising campaign. For information on making a donation, visit www.4-c.org. |

IABC Madison Welcomes Novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard |
| 11:30 a.m. |
Edgewater Hotel, Madison |
The Madison chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) is pleased to welcome best-selling novelist Jacquelyn Mitchard to its October 28 luncheon meeting at the Edgewater Hotel, 666 Wisconsin Ave., Madison.
Jacquelyn, whose first novel, The Deep End of the Ocean, was named by USA Today as one of the ten most influential books of the past 25 years, will speak about her own work and share a preview of her newest book, No Time to Say Good-bye, a sequel to her first novel. She will also discuss some of her writing students' success stories and talk about a creative writing retreat that has helped many people in midlife achieve amazing results with their own writing. After offering hints and tips, Jacquelyn will open the floor for questions from attendees. After the presentation, Jacquelyn will be available to sign copies of her newest book, which can be purchased on site.
The Deep End of the Ocean was chosen as the first novel in the book club made famous by the TV host Oprah Winfrey, and transformed into a feature film produced by and starring Michelle Pfeiffer. Jacquelyn Mitchard’s other adult fiction includes The Most Wanted, A Theory of Relativity, Twelve Times Blessed, The Breakdown Lane, Cage of Stars and Still Summer. Critics have praised her work for its authentic humanity, and readers see in her characters emotions they understand, however extreme the circumstances of the stories.
This luncheon meeting, like all IABC Madison meetings, is open to the public. To attend, email your name, phone number and lunch choice (Broiled Fillet of Salmon —or— Pasta Primavera) to: iabcmadison@verizon.net.
