City of Madison to Pay McDonalds for 2008 Lawsuit
9/7/10
The city of Madison will pay McDonald’s $312,000 to settle a 2008 lawsuit claiming a pedestrian footbridge built by the city was detrimental to the city’s oldest McDonald’s franchise at 3051 East Washington Avenue. The restaurant owner, Mike Mangin, is considering moving the business three blocks west to the East Madison Shopping Center as a result. When the bridge was built in 2006, Madison offered McDonalds $56,000 to compensate for the obstruction, but McDonald’s Corp. appealed in 2008, claiming a loss of $408,000 in business as a result of the bridge. The settlement money, if approved, would come from existing construction fund money, and needs to be approved before September 20 to avert the start of a jury trial.
